It is hard to describe what happened during the EMDR process. The best way I can put it into words is "I just feel different". I felt the changes were from within me not around me. I couldn't really tell what was happening and working, while in session. However, when I would come in and report to Shannon, I would share how I reacted to situations and relationships differently. It seemed the changes were subtle but at the end of therapy, I could see several changes I had made. It wasn't always easy. I experienced deep feelings that had been stuffed for some time. After the hard work, I learned "I would be okay" and felt a sense of relief. I felt supported and safe to process past experiences and feel uncomfortable and painful feelings with Shannon. ~past client

I started working with Shannon to deal with some anxiety issues that had crept up. During my first visit with her, she recommended EMDR as a treatment method and gave me some resources to read up on it. The scientific information and statistics were fascinating, and I was interested in giving it a try as it sounded very effective, but I had a hard time finding any real explanation of what it was and how it worked.
The best I can explain, EMDR is a way for your brain to process information… memories, etc… more thoroughly and effectively. It connects different parts of your brain (think right brain vs left brain) to be able to work through information together. The first treatment seemed almost like watching a movie of certain points in my life, in reverse. After that session, I immediately began sleeping better which I hadn’t done in months. I began to notice that when my anxiety was triggered, my mind reacted differently than it had before- my thoughts seemed more logical and less over-reactive to potentially negative situations. I could tell that the EMDR was working and I was doing a better job of dealing with stressful situations.
Through the treatment process we worked through different memories and even worked on some future scenarios that could trigger my anxiety. With the help of EMDR, memories that were once painful or difficult were examined, dealt with, re-stored, and my negative reactions and emotions were replaced with a neutral feeling. It’s more than just putting a positive spin on something bad. It’s easy to say, ‘well at least I learned from this situation’. With EMDR, your brain really is able to re-examine a memory and store it in a way that it is no longer painful. The memory might always be negative, but you can remove the negative emotional attachment to the memory.
What I appreciated most about EMDR was the efficiency of treatment. Instead of being in therapy for months on end, I was able to work through everything in a matter of about 6 weeks. During the treatment duration, I gradually felt more and more like myself and regained the self esteem and confidence that I had lost when my anxiety was first triggered. It’s impossible to really describe how beneficial EMDR is without actually going through it yourself, but it is a tool that I’m glad Shannon suggested for me. ~past client
