EMDRIA Approved Consultant

Shannon Schiefer MA, LPC is an EMDRIA Approved Consultant offering individual and group, in person and virtual consultation.

Shannon's advanced training and area of specialty has been in developmental and complex trauma. Shannon explores case conceptualization through an attachment lens focusing on the relationship within self, for both client and therapist, as well as the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client. She has also received additional training in IFS, AEDP and somatic therapies, including Sensorimotor and Somatic Experiencing.

Shannon has trained and currently attends consultation with Deany Laliotis, who has served as the Director of Training of Francine Shapiro's EMDR Institute and is currently the Founder of The Center of Excellence in EMDR Therapy.

Shannon's desire and passion for consultation is providing a supportive and encouraging environment to identify and understand decision points throughout therapy. Together, as both Shannon and consultees explore decisions and interventions, a consultee gains perspective and confidence in his/her choices and case conceptualization. Conceptualizing cases in this way allows for consultees to have a clearer understanding and awareness of when and how to be flexible in interventions and with one's therapeutic stance. It allows for a therapist to make choices instead of reacting to what is happening in session. It is not about identifying what is right or wrong in the choices made in sessions. It is a discovery in which a consultee...
  • determines how he/she arrived at making her/his decision points
  • identifies what is happening within the relationship and re-processing
  • practices attunement - microtracking one's own internal signals to direct responses
  • learns when to be inter-relational and when to be intra-relational
  • increases knowledge of different types of interweaves
  • develops confidence in knowing when to guide and when to follow your client
  • builds skills to respond to looping, blocking beliefs and different attachment presentations
  • understands how to handle a high accessor and an under accessor client
  • improves contracting with your client-knowing your goal of where you going and eliciting an active participant agreement with your client
  • discusses different perspectives to enhance therapeutic choices
  • explores with curiosity one's comfort zone to broaden skills and develop confidence
  • learns how to shift from a trauma spiral to transformational spiral

Consultation also includes reviewing different protocols, interweaves and interventions. However, if you are searching for 'what to do' responses, Shannon's consultation approach may not be the best fit. Shannon is looking to work with therapists, who see the client as a whole, believes in championing the client's capabilities rather than being the agent of change for their clients. EMDR psychotherapy includes helping clients attach new meaning to their experiences and facilitates a deeper healing beyond symptom relief. Her ideal consultee would be...
  • One who is curious about learning how they are contributing to and affecting the therapeutic relationship and client processing
  • One who is willing to assess client's capacity rather than implement a checklist of resourcing strategies
  • One who is willing to practice mindful tracking of their own sensations and feelings in session
  • One who is willing to be brave and explore what you do not know or do not see
  • One who is willing to express their thoughts and reactions to feedback in consultation to promote integration of new information into what already makes you unique as a therapist
  • One who is willing to take risks to see what happens. A practice makes progress learning approach
  • One who is willing to discover their own answers rather than expecting to find the right answer

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like more information on consultation.
