The Power of Vulnerability ~ Brene' Brown
I highly recommend this video! For anyone trying to face those hidden, dark spaces inside of us which cause fear, anxiety, pain, and guilt, this video explains the benefits and strength that comes from our vulnerabilities and insecurities.
The Gift and Power of Emotional Courage ~ Susan David
One of my favorite TEDtalks. When emotions get pushed away or contained they become bigger. It's called emotional amplification. She says, "I am not anti-happiness but when we push aside normal emotions to embrace false positivity we lose the skills to deal with the world as IT IS not as we wish it to be". Describe and label our emotions accurately. Our emotions are data BUT they are NOT directives. We can use our emotions to shape our lives to direct us in path we want to go.We own our emotions. They do not own us. We generate the pathway to our best selves through our emotions. What is this emotion telling me? Courage is not an absence of fear. Courage is fear walking!
How To Make Stress Your Friend ~Kelly McGonigal
I love this TED talk. Science is proving how changing our thoughts and beliefs can not just change but SAVE our lives! Her information on oxytocin makes a good argument for hugging someone instead of isolating and curling up in a ball when stressed.
Mindfulness and Healing ~ Shannon Paige
Shannon Paige, a cancer survivor, talks honestly about her survival from the emotional struggle cancer brought into her life. I loved how she described 'getting into her skin' helped her beat her depression. Often, when dealing with chronic or terminal illness, we lose the connection to our own body. She talks about how yoga and mindfulness helped her connect to her breath and body. She addresses a research study conducted at John Hopkins which states cancer (as well as depression and anxiety) cannot live in a high oxygen environment. Interesting finding.... which proves the importance of our breath!
Ted Talk- What Really Matters At the End of Life:
Dr. BJ Miller
Watch this thought-heart provoking message about what matters at the end of life. What do we really wish for? When we face this question at the end of life, we discover how death answers our life's greatest desires and mysteries.
How to Practice Emotional First Aid ~ Guy Winch
Guy Winch explains beautifully how important it is to take care of our emotional well-being. We are a very 'physically-focused' society. We will easily schedule a doctor's appointment when we experience a new ache or pain. However, just as easily, we tend to discount or minimize our feelings which are 'symptoms' of our emotional aches and pains. Often, our physical pains are the result of not tending to our emotional needs. Please take a listen to this powerful TED Talk to learn the value of caring for and validating our feelings and emotional needs.
The Power of Mindfulness: What you Practice Grows Stronger by Shauna Shapiro
The Space Between Self-Esteem and Self-Compassion by Kristen Neff
Kristen Neff explains how self esteem is based on achievement and perceived value. It can vary from situation to situation. Whereas, self compassion is always accessible and available. It is not based on having certain traits or characteristics. Self compassion can bring clarity and awareness. Self-esteem depends on self-evaluation and contingent on our latest success or failure.
How Mindfulness Meditation Redefines Pain, Happiness and Satisfaction ~ Dr Kasim Al-Mashat
Dr. Kasim Al-Mashat points out when we fight or resist our reality, it only gets worse. He talks about how mindfulness based practices can alleviate the suffering that exists in our minds and how we can create choice in how we respond.
Brene Brown ~ Listening to Shame
Brene Brown helps us learn and grow from our shame instead of being held back in silence and judgment. I love the last 2 minutes when she talks about empathy being the destroyer of shame.
